Hey I was wondering if anyone knows the info on the Meckley's Quarry dig in Mandata(?) Pennsylvania.... I remember it's usually the 2nd weekend in September, am I right?

I found this on the web....

"MECKLEYS QUARRY - MANDATA, PA - Northumberland Co., - undoubtedly the best location in PA for celestine. Many pieces have removed from here with museum-quality crystals. Collecting for clubs by appointment only. Call Ted Keck 570-758-3340. There is an open house for all collectors the day after Winfield in September."

I don't know what Winfield is though...if you find anything out let me know, I am very interested in going there too!

Hello Shawn,

The Meckley's Quarry web site gives the telephone number 570 758 3011 for rockhounds looking for collecting information.

The open house has usually been the third weekend in September. I do not know the date for this year.

That weekend has been an active one for collectors in recent years. Eastern used to open up their quarry in Winfield on Saturday, and then Meckley's was open on Sunday. The Eastern Quarry in Winfield has been closed for several years. The past several years, the Eastern Shamokin Quarry has been open. Again, I have no info for this year.

I think Mike has a field trip report posted on the Meckley's Quarry. Check it out.

The Meckley's quarry is usually well worth the effort to make a trip to collect. The celestine can be quite spectacular. Good specimens of calcite and strontianite can also be collected. What is really cool are specimens with all three minerals in association.

I will check around and see if I can find more info for this year.

Best Regards,
Al O

Thanks, I saw that page before, but figured I can't call until after the holidays on Tuesday. I hope they have it again this year, the last few years were fun! I think I'll invest in a wagon or wheelbarrow if they have it again this year.

OK, I just called and talked to a very nice lady at Meckley's. She said they were having it this year, but could not find the dates on her calendar. She said she THINKS it is on the Sunday after their rock & gem show, and told me to check http://rockandmineral.org for future updates.

I went to the above website, and saw that their gem show is slated for the 16th & 17th, so that would put the probable date for the celestine dig on Sunday, September 24th.

Will post additional info when I find out more.

I went to the meeting tonight and they said the quarry open house is the Sunday after the show.

Mike,

Your email really helped out tonight!! Everyone introduced themselves and told stories of their trips to NC collecting with Mike Streeter. They are a really nice group of people. Thank you again!!

This Sunday! The forecast is calling for rain though, so it may have a chance of being cancelled I guess?

I hope the weathermen are wrong like they usually are.

What a fun day! We arrived way late....like 3:30pm
Didn't find too much celestine, but towards the end, I just flipped over a huge boulder and it had a nice huge pocket of calcite with tons of strontianite "puffs" all over it. Luckily they let my buddy drive his car down to load up our stuff! It pays to stay until the end, that walk with that boulder would've killed me hehe

Anyone else make it there? I was with the motley crew of dreadlocked hippies.
